Are you a bibliophile or are you a hoarder?

We all love books, but it is impossible to read them all. Some of our clients, including many academics, would have rathered to face the wrath of their landlord or housing cooperative, instead of throwing out one book.

The client in the video below was saved from eviction by Disaster Masters®, after they contacted us to use our disposophobia services.

If you, a loved one, client or colleague are a bibliophile and need assistance with a hoarding, syllogomania or Disposophobia problem, please contact us at 1-800-ThePlan, or send us an email at for immediate solutions.

Organizing books need to be organized

Organizing books

The image on the right was taken at a recent Disaster Masters project in Manhattan. The client had amassed several dozen books about organizing and getting rid of clutter, but all were just part of the mess that started at the front door and continued throughout the apartment. She had not read a single chapter in any of the books.

Like many others that are classed by the media as hoarders, she had time management and multi-tasking issues. The books became the problem, rather than helping her to find a solution.

The real way to solve this mess comes from within. The first step to freeing yourself from the strangling effects of too much stuff is to make the decision to call the Disaster Masters.

Our coaching and Life Transition Management services are rungs on the ladder in freeing you from the cluttered life that you have created for yourself.

If you, a loved one, client or colleague need assistance with a hoarding or Disposophobia problem, please contact us at 1-800-ThePlan, or email me at for immediate solutions.

Garbage removers

    • The more they haul away, the more money they make. They trash all items in the home – both good and bad.
    • Laborers do not know the difference between junk mail and a dividend check.
    • They sell your valuables at auctions.
    • They sell your valuables at flea markets.
    • It is little wonder that untrained day laborers and small moving companies simply throw everything away – they see it as garbage.
    • They get paid twice – when they haul it and when they sell it.
    • They haul trash.

Why You Shouldn’t Hang Up On Ron

Several years ago, a client wrote a really nice poem about the work we at Disaster Masters carried out on her home.

Why You Shouldn’t Hang Up On RonRon phone
I could feel my heart beating faster and faster
Is this the service called Disaster Masters?
My hands were shaky as I made that first call
It was not what I was expecting at all

A gruff voice answered, “How may I help you?”
My clutter is out of control and I don’t know what to do
Although the man sensed that I was afraid
He responded, “Why don’t you just hire a maid?”

I thought that I must have reached a wrong number
And was ready to hang up and return to my slumber
What legitimate business would answer in this fashion?
But in that tough voice I detected a note of compassion

I remained on the line and relayed my sad tale
An apartment overrun with trash and junk mail
The man listened carefully and began to probe
You sound like a classic “disposophobe”

I’d have to assess your situation with my own eyes
Don’t waste your dough on professionals who offer to organize
Forget those self help books, shrinks and talk show jerks
Just follow “The Plan” — it’s guaranteed to work

When Ron and Melissa first walked through my door
I almost died of embarrassment that’s for sure
“We’ve seen it all so get over your shame
It’s time to let go of self-loathing and blame”

I was finally ready to combat my fears
He was the first “guest” I’ve had over in 25 years!
I suppose it’s some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder
But was I a clutterer or was I a hoarder?

Melissa is “Numero Uno” on the Project Management team
She’s Ron’s polar opposite so it would seem
While Ron barks into the telephone
Melissa speaks in a honeyed tone

Whatever the reason for their mutual attraction
United this couple instantly springs into action
They assemble the perfect “Mission Impossible” crew
And begins to implement “The Plan” for you

Several years back, Disaster Masters founder Ron Alford was featured on the IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) Radio Show, where he discussed the finer points of Disposophobia and the people that the media terms as hoarders. Check out the radio interview here.

Thought Masters™

We are frequently asked how we have had such success with our decluttering projects over the years.

Of the many factors that go into our processes, a vital element is how we help the client to adjust their way of thinking, particularly with regard to how they envision their lives in the future. This is where our Thought Masters™ website comes in.ThoughtMasters Ad

A huge number of people in the US have been misdirected to believe that they can master time by multitasking and even defy the laws of physics. Like being in two places at the same time or extending a day into 30 hours.

Yes, we agree that what you think about is probably doable, providing you have devoted the time and place to implement your thoughts into viable action plans. Thinking is one thing, doing what you think is another. In the real world there are no super people who can do two projects simultaneously. Its one or the other never both.

The net result is that your mind creates the environment that you live and work in.  Projects and stuff everywhere on every horizontal surface and hanging on every door and hook too. If it is not stopped the new stuff ends up on the floor and then on top of previous “things to do”, books, newspapers and so on.

You think the solution is to buy a book or two on clutter management. These too end up on the pile and create more clutter. Boxes, containers, shelves to store stuff end up as more clutter.

A cluttered mind creates a cluttered home, office, relationships, and a stressful life laden with anxiety and sickness.

Hoarding Kills

The death of a firefighter in Brooklyn is the latest high profile incident, where a hoarder has caused undue harm to themselves and/ or others, due to being incumbered with stuff.Fire image

Over the years, we at Disaster Masters® have recovered many hoarder’s homes that have been ravaged by fire and staved off many likely fire disasters too.

The image on the right is of an apartment in a Manhattan high-rise, where the owner had a small fire. We were able to recover the home successfully after the fire, but the apartment-owner and her neighbors were very lucky that the abundance of flammable material in the apartment did not cause the whole building to catch fire.

The image below is of a home in Queens, where much like the cause of the Brooklyn fire, the elderly homeowner had left an electrical wire buried amongst a mass of newspapers and garbage. The Queens homeowner was lucky, as the wires merely smoldered and did not start a significant blaze, the consequences of which would have been extremely grave.Pre fire image

Statics show that there are almost 6 hoarders on each of New York’s 72,000 city blocks, so there are a lot of people, many elderly and infirm, that are suffering from these conditions. If you, a loved one, client or colleague live amongst these conditions, please contact Disaster Masters at 1-800-ThePlan, or email us at for immediate solutions.

Hoarding Facts

With over 30 years in this business, the Disaster Masters® have learned a lot about the people that the media call “hoarders” and how best to coach them to living new and better lives that are free from clutter, both on the floor and in their heads. Some of the Hoarding Facts that we have found to be completely true are interesting, some are funny and yet more are tragic. Below, you will find a selection of Hoarding Facts. Hoarding Fact: We at Disaster Masters® have found that the majority of people that are referred to as “hoarders” are very smart, the vast majority being college educated, some with several degrees, and some are even members of MENSA.

Hoarding Fact: A “hoarder’s” worst nightmare is anyone who they think is going come into their property, take charge and remove all of their belongings.

Hoarding Fact: Old people who cannot physically take out the trash are NOT “hoarders”; they have simply ran out of gas.

Hoarding Fact: You are a “hoarder”. Go to Hoarding Facts to find out more information.
